Despite an 8-7 lead with only 19 seconds remaining in the fourth quarter, the No. 10/12 Pioneers lost by 9-8 in overtime to then-No. 17 Fairfield on Saturday afternoon at Lessing Field in Connecticut. With the loss, Air Jordan 3, Denver dropped to 7-5 over all and 3-3 in the E.C.A.C., clinching the No. 4 seed in the conference tournament thanks to Air Force’s 14-4 loss to Ohio State over the weekend.
The Pioneers fell to No. 16 the national rankings after posting their third one-goal, overtime loss of the season, logging a 0-3 record outside of regulation play. Fairfield moved up to No. 13/14.
“It’s always tough to lose in overtime, especially when leading the whole game,” Coach Bill Tierney said. “Fairfield played well when it counted and took advantage of its opportunities. You never know why so many one-goal games go against you.”
Denver will host the E.C.A.C .tournament May 2-4 at Peter Barton Lacrosse Stadium, taking on No. 1 seed and No. 1 ranked Loyola (12-0) on May 2. Fairfield and Ohio State will play on Saturday to determine the No. 2 and No. 3 seeds, air jordan 3 for sale, as both teams are currently 4-1 in the E.C.A.C. The victors of each contest will face off on May 4 in the E.C.A.C. championship game.
After posting a disappointing 12-9 loss to Loyola on April 14, the Pioneers will have to focus on cashing in on scoring opportunities during the rematch, as 39 shots against the Greyhounds resulted in only nine goals. According to Tierney, using these chances to score has been one of the biggest struggles for the Pioneers this season. Against Fairfield over the weekend, Denver outshot the Stags, 33-30, but failed to capitalize on enough of the opportunities to claim the victory.
“As in the earlier situations, we will work hard this week to try to improve,” Tierney said. “Often times I’ve talked about how fortunate we were last year, when we scored a lot of goals in tough situations. This year, for some reason, that’s just a little harder to come by. More attention is being paid to our top scorers and there’s more film on us. We know they can do it, air jordan 3 for cheap, so it’s just a matter of sticking with them and hoping they get into the back of the net.”
Before the E.C.A.C. tournament, Denver must prepare for Friday’s showdown with No. 3/4 Duke at Sports Authority Field as part of the Whitman’s Sampler Mile High Classic, hosted by Inside Lacrosse. Duke (13-3) enters the contest riding a 10-game winning streak after claiming the A.C.C. championship with a 12-9 victory over No. 5 North Carolina on Sunday.
The sophomores Jordan Wolf, Christian Walsh and Josh Dionne lead the Blue Devils’ offense with 55, 39 and 36 points. The junior goalkeeper Dan Wigrizer has recorded 97 saves this season, averaging 8.34 goals against in 11 games.“I don’t believe in luck,” Tierney said. “I just believe in preparation. So we’ll keep preparing these guys the best we can.”
The seniors Mark Matthews and Alex Demopoulos continue to lead the Pioneer offense with 46 and 35 points this season. After recording one assist against Fairfield, Demopoulos extended his point streak to 47 games, the second-longest streak in the nation. Matthews contributed two goals and currently ranks fifth with a 41-game point streak.
The junior midfielder Chase Carraro continues to be a dominant force for the Pioneers, ranking sixth in the nation in face-off wins this season with a .630 win percentage. His performance has contributed greatly to the Denver offense’s ability to put shots on goal.
“I just have to give him all the credit in the world,” Tierney said of Carraro. “He’s gotten us so many balls this season. He’s been our best player so far this year; he's just a marvel to watch.”
